On the campus of Sam Houston State University, the Enrollment Management Office is offering fun things to do for children of all ages this fall and all year round, with the Jr. Bearkats program.

The program is free of charge to children ages 1 to 12. Students receive a membership card upon sign up which offers them exclusive Jr. Bearkats benefits. They receive free admission to the Sam Houston Museum and allowance into certain SHSU athletic events.

“We are excited for everything this fall semester will have to offer,”  said Valerie Matthys, the On Campus Recruitment Manager. “We are working even harder this year to provide more activities and fun things for the kids to do.”

Jr. Bearkats is currently preparing for their upcoming fall semester, which is packed with activities for kids.

“This fall, in October, we will have the homecoming parade where kids can ride on the float and pass out goodies to the crowd,” Matthys said. “The theme for this year’s SHSU Homecoming is Sammy for President, so students will be dressed in their presidential costumes ready to vote for Sammy.”

Kids who are signed up for Jr. Bearkats will be allowed a free ride on the float in the parade and will be able to pass out items to the crowd during the event.

“We will also be at certain home games this fall so look out for us there,” Matthys said. “We will have a moon bounce and of course fun things to hand out to the kids.”

Jr. Bearkats also hosts events in the spring. The annual Easter egg hunt will resume this spring and kids are excited to start looking for eggs filled with treats around the Sam Houston campus.

Upon sign up, students receive a free backpack filled with items like stickers, Jr. Bearkats tattoos, checklists of things to get done before college as well as a complimentary Jr. Bearkats T-shirt.

The goal of the Jr. Bearkats program is to get children excited about attending SHSU. Students are allowed the chance to see the campus and imagine college life in Huntsville. The On Campus Recruitment Office also hosts summer camps in a variety of subjects as well as a day where Girl and Boy Scouts can enjoy themselves on campus and earn a badge at the same time. At summer camps students stay on campus in dorms and are immersed in the college experience.

Patrick Antwi, the staff associate summer camps coordinator for the office of Camps and On-Campus Recruitment at SHSU says the camps are beneficial for students.

“These camps are a lot of fun with a lot of spirit. It gives students a college atmosphere while they are enjoying themselves.” Antwi said. “Aramark dining services offers very tasty food with a really good nutrition plan.”

Sign up for Jr. Bearkats is free, parents can fill out an application at www.shsu.edu/jrbearkats, or call (936) 294-1928.
